Setting Rules and Routines From Day One

1/10Why day one matters more than any other day
The first class sets every expectation. Students decide in the first 20 minutes whether this teacher is serious, whether the class is worth their time, and how much they can get away with. You don't get a second chance to establish norms. If you're relaxed on day one, students assume that's the standard. Tightening up later always feels like punishment.
In this class, we always start on time. If you're late, join quietly.
Simple, clear, no negotiation.
When I say 'switch,' you change partners. Let's practice that now.
Teaching the routine by doing it.
Tip
It's much easier to relax rules after a strict start than to tighten them after a loose one.
