Understanding CEFR levels
CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference) is the standard the world uses to describe English ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2(proficient). It's what schools, employers, and visa programs mean when they ask for a level.
- A1–A2 (Basic): everyday phrases, simple present and past, survival situations.
- B1–B2 (Independent): connected speech, opinions, work topics, arguing a point.
- C1–C2 (Proficient): abstract ideas, register control, near-native precision.
Once you know your level, a focused course is the fastest way to move up, and if you teach, our ESL job board lists English teaching roles worldwide.
