Teach English in the UAE

Top-of-market pay and tax-free income for credentialed teachers.

The UAE pays among the highest ESL salaries in the world, and income is tax-free. The trade-off is that hiring standards are strict. Most positions require a teaching license from your home country, several years of K-12 experience, and a master's in education or TESOL for the best roles. Adult ESL roles at language centers are easier to land but pay less.

Salary

K-12 licensed teachers: 12k to 22k AED per month, often with housing or 50k to 90k AED yearly housing allowance. Adult ESL at universities and centers: 8k to 14k AED. Add airfare, end-of-service gratuity, and health insurance to most packages.

Visa

Employment visa sponsored by the school. Requires attested degree, criminal background check, and medical exam. Process takes 4 to 8 weeks.

Best for

Credentialed teachers with K-12 experience who want to maximize savings. Not a starter market.

Common questions about teaching in United Arab Emirates

Can I teach in the UAE without a teaching license?

For K-12, no. Adult ESL at universities or centers will hire experienced TEFL teachers without a state license, but pay is lower.

How much can I actually save?

Licensed K-12 teachers commonly save 4k to 8k USD per month after housing and living costs. Two-year contracts net 80k to 200k USD in savings for diligent savers.

What is the cultural adjustment like?

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are international cities with most amenities. Dress codes are moderate in public, alcohol is licensed, and the workweek runs Monday to Friday.
