What Good Classroom Management Actually Looks Like

1/10It's not about control
Most new ESL teachers think classroom management means keeping students quiet. It doesn't. Good classroom management means creating conditions where learning happens naturally. A well-managed class is one where students know what to do, feel safe making mistakes, and stay engaged. Silence is not the goal. Productive noise is.
Students working in pairs, both speaking
This is good management, not chaos.
A quiet class where nobody volunteers answers
This looks controlled but learning isn't happening.
Tip
If your students are silent for more than 5 minutes in a conversation class, something is wrong.
