For schools and employers

Hire English teachers in the UAE

Licensed-teacher hiring, sponsorship obligations, and a candidate pool that is smaller and more selective than it looks.

The Gulf pays the most and is the most demanding about credentials. Schools here are generally hiring qualified, licensed teachers rather than TEFL-certified graduates, and the candidates who meet that bar know exactly what they are worth. Hiring well in the UAE is less about finding applicants and more about being ready to move when a genuinely qualified one appears.

What it costs to hire in UAE

Packages are built around far more than salary. Housing or a substantial housing allowance, medical insurance, annual flights, and end-of-service gratuity are standard expectations, and schools offering fewer of them are not competing in the same market. Tax-free salary is the headline, but candidates compare total packages closely and will ask about every component.

Visa sponsorship and your obligations

The employer sponsors residency and the work permit, and the process is employer-driven from the outset. Expect to require attested degree certificates and, for most school roles, a teaching licence or qualification from the teacher's home jurisdiction, plus attested background documentation. Attestation requirements are detailed and vary by emirate and authority, so confirm the current process with the relevant education and immigration bodies before making an offer.

When to recruit, and how long it takes

Hiring is built around an academic year starting in late summer, and the serious recruitment happens months ahead, with strong candidates committing well before the spring. A school still looking in July is choosing from what the market has left.

What the contract has to spell out

Specify the full package rather than the salary, because that is how candidates evaluate it: housing or allowance and its terms, medical cover and whether dependants are included, flight entitlement and frequency, gratuity, contracted teaching load, paid leave aligned to the school calendar, and notice. Never hold a passport.

How this goes wrong

Recruiting on the same timeline as a language centre. Qualified, licensed teachers who will relocate to the Gulf plan a year ahead and are gone by spring. The second is advertising a tax-free salary without the package details, which reads as concealment to experienced Gulf candidates and suppresses applications from exactly the people you want.

Questions schools ask

What qualifications do teachers need to work in UAE schools?
Most school roles expect a relevant degree and a teaching licence or qualification from the teacher's home jurisdiction, along with genuine classroom experience. This is a materially higher bar than TEFL-based markets in Asia. Attestation of documents is required, and the process varies by emirate, so confirm the current requirements with the relevant authorities.
What is normally included in a UAE teaching package?
Housing or a housing allowance, medical insurance, annual flights and an end-of-service gratuity are the standard components alongside salary. Candidates compare complete packages, not headline figures, so a listing that mentions only a tax-free salary will underperform against one that itemises everything.
When should we recruit for a UAE academic year?
Months ahead. The year starts in late summer and the strongest licensed candidates commit before spring. Recruitment that begins in early summer is competing for whoever remains rather than for the people you actually wanted.
Who sponsors the visa for a teacher in the UAE?
The employer, and the process is employer-driven throughout, including the attestation requirements for degrees and supporting documents. Budget real administrative time for it and start before the candidate's notice period elsewhere ends.

Immigration and licensing requirements change. Confirm the current position with the relevant ministry or authority before you contract a teacher.
