Teach English in Beijing, China
Capital city with strong university and international school markets.
Beijing concentrates universities, government English programmes and international schools, so the mix here leans more academic than Shanghai's commercial market. Chaoyang and Haidian hold the deepest concentration of teaching jobs and pay tracks closely with Shanghai. University posts carry lighter contact hours and long holidays against a lower monthly figure, which is a genuinely different job from a training centre and worth deciding on before you apply.
Neighborhoods
Chaoyang for the expat core, Sanlitun and Lido, and most training-centre work. Haidian, and Wudaokou in particular, for universities and a student-priced area. Shunyi for the international schools and the families who teach in them. Dongcheng and Xicheng for central, older, and closer to everything historic.
Cost of living
Roughly 4,000 to 10,000 RMB a month for a one-bedroom, generally a little under Shanghai. Winter heating and air filtration are real line items here in a way they are not further south.

Teachers interested in academic settings, university roles, or government-adjacent positions rather than the commercial training market.
China at a glance
Salary: International schools: 25k to 45k RMB per month. Training centers: 18k to 30k RMB. Public schools: 12k to 22k RMB. Universities: 10k to 20k RMB with long vacations. Most contracts include housing or stipend.
Visa: Z visa. Requires a bachelor's degree and a criminal record check (notarized and apostilled). Foreign language teachers also need more than two years of language-education experience, which is waived with a bachelor's in education or language, a teaching certificate from your own country, or a qualified international language teaching certificate (the standard published by the Beijing government). Many schools also ask for a 120-hour TEFL. Applicants are usually citizens of countries where English is the national language. Age cap of 60 is typical.
