Teach English in Shenzhen, China
Tech-economy city with a growing international school market.
Shenzhen is one of the youngest major Chinese cities and a tech hub on the Hong Kong border. International schools have expanded quickly because the population skews young, high-income and recently arrived, and training centres hire heavily alongside them. Almost nobody here is from here, which makes it noticeably easier to build a social circle than in cities with settled local networks. Hong Kong is a border crossing away for visa runs and weekends.
Neighborhoods
Nanshan for the tech corridor, the newer international schools and the Shekou expat area. Futian for the central business district and the shortest commutes. Luohu for older, cheaper housing and the main Hong Kong crossing. Bao'an for the lowest rent, at the cost of a long metro ride.
Cost of living
Roughly 3,500 to 9,000 RMB a month for a one-bedroom, under Beijing and Shanghai but climbing. Shekou and Nanshan price like a Tier-1 city; the eastern districts do not.
Best for
Teachers wanting a modern Chinese city without Beijing's bureaucracy or Shanghai's competition, and anyone who wants Hong Kong within reach.

Salary: International schools: 25k to 45k RMB per month. Training centers: 18k to 30k RMB. Public schools: 12k to 22k RMB. Universities: 10k to 20k RMB with long vacations. Most contracts include housing or stipend.
Visa: Z visa. Requires a bachelor's degree and a criminal record check (notarized and apostilled). Foreign language teachers also need more than two years of language-education experience, which is waived with a bachelor's in education or language, a teaching certificate from your own country, or a qualified international language teaching certificate (the standard published by the Beijing government). Many schools also ask for a 120-hour TEFL. Applicants are usually citizens of countries where English is the national language. Age cap of 60 is typical.
