Teach English in Kyoto, Japan
Cultural capital with universities and a smaller, steady ESL market.
Kyoto's ESL market is smaller than Tokyo or Osaka but steady. Universities and the language schools serving the city's large student population provide most positions, which makes hiring here follow the academic calendar more closely than the year-round eikaiwa churn elsewhere. Building height limits and heritage zoning keep housing supply tight, so rent does not fall as far below Osaka as the city's size suggests. Osaka is fifteen minutes away by express, and plenty of teachers work in one and live in the other.

Neighborhoods
Shijo and Kawaramachi for the central schools and the shortest commute. Sakyo-ku around Kyoto University for the academic market and a student-priced neighbourhood. Fushimi and the south for the cheapest rent still on a fast line. Arashiyama and the west for quiet, at the cost of a longer trip in.
Cost of living
Roughly 45,000 to 80,000 JPY a month for a small apartment, closer to Osaka than to Tokyo but tighter supply than either. Expect to search longer rather than pay more.
Best for
Teachers prioritising culture and traditional Japan over pay or job volume, and anyone targeting university work, where the hiring window is narrower and earlier than the eikaiwa market.
Japan at a glance
Salary: JET: 4.02M JPY before tax for the first appointment, rising to 4.32M by the fourth. Eikaiwa: 250k to 280k JPY per month. ALT dispatch: 230k to 270k JPY per month. Cost of living outside Tokyo is reasonable.
Visa: Instructor visa or Specialist in Humanities visa. Bachelor's required. Since 15 April 2026 Japan's immigration agency also expects CEFR B2 in the working language for language-based jobs on the Specialist status (see our B2 rule explainer). Native English speaker preference for most roles. JET requires application by November for the following August start.
