Teach English in Osaka, Japan
Lower cost of living than Tokyo with a strong eikaiwa market.
Osaka and the wider Kansai region have a deep eikaiwa market with rent typically well below Tokyo for the same size of apartment. The city is compact and flat, most teaching work sits on the Midosuji subway line or the JR loop, and the commute that eats an hour each way in Tokyo is usually twenty minutes here. Kyoto and Kobe are both inside a thirty minute train ride, so one job can put three cities in reach.

Neighborhoods
Umeda and the Kita ward for the business district and the largest cluster of eikaiwa branches. Namba and Shinsaibashi for nightlife and the shortest walk to evening classes. Tennoji and the south for cheaper rent on the same subway lines. Kyobashi for a commuter base with fast access to both.
Cost of living
Roughly 50,000 to 90,000 JPY a month for a small apartment outside the centre, noticeably under Tokyo for equivalent space. Eikaiwa pay is broadly national, so the lower rent is the whole difference and it lands in savings.
Best for
Teachers who want Japan without Tokyo prices, and who would rather have a short commute and a loud, friendly city than the maximum number of listings.
Japan at a glance
Salary: JET: 4.02M JPY before tax for the first appointment, rising to 4.32M by the fourth. Eikaiwa: 250k to 280k JPY per month. ALT dispatch: 230k to 270k JPY per month. Cost of living outside Tokyo is reasonable.
Visa: Instructor visa or Specialist in Humanities visa. Bachelor's required. Since 15 April 2026 Japan's immigration agency also expects CEFR B2 in the working language for language-based jobs on the Specialist status (see our B2 rule explainer). Native English speaker preference for most roles. JET requires application by November for the following August start.
