Teach English in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Coastal city with a more relaxed atmosphere than Riyadh.

Jeddah is the country's commercial hub and historically its most international city, shaped by centuries as the port for pilgrims travelling to Mecca. The Red Sea coast, a diving scene and a noticeably more relaxed social atmosphere than Riyadh are the draw for teachers who want Saudi pay without Riyadh's austerity. The university and training market is smaller than the capital's, so there are fewer roles and they turn over less often.

Neighborhoods

Al Hamra and the Corniche for the sea, the newer buildings and most expat housing. Al Rawdah and Al Zahra for the middle of the market and access to the universities. Al Balad, the historic old town, for atmosphere rather than convenience. Compound or not is again the decision that shapes the year.

Cost of living

Roughly 2,500 to 6,000 SAR a month for a one-bedroom, under Riyadh, and typically moot where accommodation is included. Humidity is high year round, which is the trade for being on the coast.

Best for

Teachers who want Saudi pay with a coastal, more international feel, and who will accept a smaller job pool for it.

Saudi Arabia at a glance

Salary: University foundation programs: 12k to 22k SAR per month tax-free. Aramco and military contracts can exceed 25k SAR. Housing, transportation, and an annual flight home are standard.

Visa: Employment visa, sponsored by the institution. Master's degree often required. Process is slow — 3 to 6 months from offer to arrival is common.
