Teach English in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Capital city with the largest concentration of university ESL roles.

Riyadh hosts most of the country's universities and government English programmes, and for an experienced teacher with a master's it is the highest-paying market in this industry anywhere, tax-free and usually with housing. The trade is social rather than professional: this is the most conservative posting on the site, teaching is frequently single-gender, and the things that make a city enjoyable elsewhere are limited here. Most people come on a defined plan to clear debt or save a deposit, and that framing is the honest one.

Neighborhoods

Olaya and the northern districts for compounds, most expat housing and the shortest commute to the universities. Diplomatic Quarter for the highest security and the highest cost. Al Malaz and the older centre for lower rent and a more local setting. Whether you are on a compound is the single biggest factor in how the year feels.

Cost of living

Roughly 3,000 to 7,000 SAR a month for a one-bedroom, and far less if accommodation is provided, which it usually is. A car is effectively required; the city is not built for walking or transit.

Best for

Experienced teachers with a master's prioritising maximum savings over lifestyle, on a fixed-term plan rather than an open-ended move.

Saudi Arabia at a glance

Salary: University foundation programs: 12k to 22k SAR per month tax-free. Aramco and military contracts can exceed 25k SAR. Housing, transportation, and an annual flight home are standard.

Visa: Employment visa, sponsored by the institution. Master's degree often required. Process is slow — 3 to 6 months from offer to arrival is common.
