Barcelona competes with Madrid as the most popular ESL destination in Spain. The market favors private academies and corporate English over public-school Auxiliares. Catalan exposure is part of the experience.
Neighborhoods
Gràcia for the classic teacher neighbourhood, village feel and reasonable rent. Eixample for central and pricier. Poble-sec and Sant Antoni for the middle ground. Poblenou for space near the beach at a longer commute.
Cost of living
Roughly 650 to 1,200 EUR a month for a room in a shared flat, the highest in Spain and still climbing. Short-term tourist lets distort the market badly, so arrive with a month of temporary housing and search in person.
