Teach English in Madrid, Spain
Largest Auxiliares program and the biggest language academy market.
Madrid hosts the largest share of Auxiliares de Conversación placements and most of Spain's language academy hiring. Cost of living is the highest in Spain but pay scales modestly to match.
Neighborhoods
Malasaña and Chueca for central, walkable and priced accordingly. Lavapiés and Usera for the cheapest central rent and the most local day-to-day. Chamberí for quiet and families. Anywhere on Line 1 or 6 if your academy sends you to more than one site, which most do.
Cost of living
Roughly 600 to 1,100 EUR a month for a room in a shared flat, which is how nearly everyone starts; a studio alone is a stretch on academy pay. Auxiliares stipends do not cover Madrid comfortably without private classes on the side.

First-time teachers in Europe who want the deepest job pool and the strongest expat community.

Salary: Auxiliares: 700 to 1,000 EUR per month for 12 to 16 hours per week. Language academies: 1,200 to 1,800 EUR. Private classes: 15 to 30 EUR per hour. Most teachers combine sources to reach 1,500 to 2,200 EUR.
Visa: EU citizens can work freely. North Americans typically use the Auxiliares student visa or, increasingly, the Spanish digital nomad visa for remote work plus side teaching. UK citizens now need a visa post-Brexit.
