Teach English in Kaohsiung, Taiwan
Southern Taiwan port city with lower rent and a smaller expat scene.
Kaohsiung is Taiwan's second city and the trade this place offers is simple: buxiban pay is broadly national, so a salary close to Taipei's meets rent well below it. The expat community is much smaller, which means less competition for jobs and a slower start socially. The climate is tropical rather than subtropical, so the winter that makes Taipei grey and damp barely arrives here, and the summer is correspondingly heavier.

Neighborhoods
Zuoying for the high speed rail station and newer buildings. Lingya and Sanmin for the central buxiban clusters and most of the work. Gushan and Sizihwan for the harbour, the university and a quieter base. Fengshan for the cheapest rent still on the MRT.
Cost of living
Roughly 10,000 to 20,000 TWD a month for a small apartment, a clear step below Taipei for the same space. Most teachers here ride a scooter, which is both cheaper and more necessary than in the capital.
Best for
Teachers wanting Taiwan with cheaper rent and less competition, who are comfortable being one of fewer foreigners in the room.
Taiwan at a glance
Salary: Buxibans: 600 to 750 NTD per hour, with most teachers working 20 to 30 hours per week. Public schools (FET): 60k to 75k NTD per month. International schools: 80k to 130k NTD per month.
Visa: Work permit through the employer, then ARC (Alien Resident Certificate). For buxiban (cram school) language teaching, Taiwan's Workforce Development Agency published cram-school checklist lists age 20 or above and graduation from college or above, and teaching the official language of your passport country; if you have not obtained a bachelor's degree, you also need a language-teaching qualification certificate. The certificate is not a substitute for the college-level education requirement. Confirm the current permit route with WDA before accepting an offer; its checklist and linked statutory reference are not fully aligned. Public-school roles follow separate Ministry of Education rules. Employers usually also ask for a criminal record certificate and a health check, and many ask for a 120-hour TEFL.
