Teach English in Taipei, Taiwan
Capital city with the densest buxiban market and the best public transit in Asia.
Taipei concentrates Taiwan's hiring. Buxibans, the private cram schools, operate in every district and do most of it, with international schools and universities at the top of the market. Buxiban hours are afternoons and evenings because students come after their own school day, so this is another split schedule. National health insurance covers teachers on a work permit and is genuinely good, which is a bigger part of the compensation here than the salary figure suggests.

Neighborhoods
Da'an for the centre, the university district and the densest buxiban cluster. Xinyi for the business district and corporate classes. Zhongshan for a central base at slightly lower rent. Banqiao and Xinbei, across the river, for materially cheaper rent on the MRT.
Cost of living
Roughly 15,000 to 30,000 TWD a month for a small apartment, higher inside Da'an and Xinyi. Transit is cheap and the city is walkable, so most teachers here do not run a vehicle at all.
Best for
Teachers who want a clean, walkable Asian capital with strong infrastructure and healthcare, and a straightforward visa path.
Taiwan at a glance
Salary: Buxibans: 600 to 750 NTD per hour, with most teachers working 20 to 30 hours per week. Public schools (FET): 60k to 75k NTD per month. International schools: 80k to 130k NTD per month.
Visa: Work permit through the employer, then ARC (Alien Resident Certificate). For buxiban (cram school) language teaching, Taiwan's Workforce Development Agency published cram-school checklist lists age 20 or above and graduation from college or above, and teaching the official language of your passport country; if you have not obtained a bachelor's degree, you also need a language-teaching qualification certificate. The certificate is not a substitute for the college-level education requirement. Confirm the current permit route with WDA before accepting an offer; its checklist and linked statutory reference are not fully aligned. Public-school roles follow separate Ministry of Education rules. Employers usually also ask for a criminal record certificate and a health check, and many ask for a 120-hour TEFL.
