Hire English teachers in China

Z visa sponsorship, work permit documentation, and the compliance bar that decides who you can legally hire.

China has the most document-heavy hiring process of the major markets, and the least tolerance for improvising around it. The work permit and Z visa route is well defined, but it front-loads authentication and legalisation steps that take weeks and that a school cannot do on the teacher's behalf. Schools that treat it as paperwork to sort out after the offer routinely lose the candidate.

What it costs to hire in China

Packages commonly include housing or a housing allowance, flight reimbursement tied to contract completion, and often a completion bonus. You will also carry the cost of the work permit process on the employer side. Because these extras vary so much between employers, a listing that states only a monthly figure gives a candidate nothing to compare and tends to underperform.

Visa sponsorship and your obligations

You sponsor the work permit and the resulting Z visa. The teacher typically needs a bachelor's degree, a clean criminal background check and, depending on the role and province, relevant teaching experience or a recognised teaching certificate. Degree and background documents must be authenticated and legalised, which happens in the teacher's home country and is the longest single step. Provincial requirements differ, so verify with the local foreign expert authority for your city rather than relying on a national summary.

When to recruit, and how long it takes

The main intake is the autumn semester beginning around September, with a second at the start of the spring semester. Because authentication and the permit process stack up, a September start means recruiting in spring and having documents underway by early summer.

What the contract has to spell out

State the teaching hours, any office hours, class sizes and age groups, because these vary enormously between training centres, public schools and international schools and are a frequent cause of early resignation. Cover housing, flight and completion bonus conditions explicitly, along with paid leave and the notice period. Never hold a teacher's passport.

How this goes wrong

Hiring someone who cannot actually qualify for the work permit and discovering it after the offer, which wastes the whole cycle. The fix is to screen for permit eligibility, degree, background check and experience, in the first conversation rather than the last. The other is underestimating document legalisation and missing the semester.

Questions schools ask

What are the requirements to sponsor a foreign English teacher in China?
Generally a bachelor's degree, a clean criminal background check, and depending on the province and role either relevant experience or a recognised teaching qualification. Degree and background documents must be authenticated and legalised before the work permit application. Requirements vary by province and change, so confirm with the foreign expert authority for your city.
How far ahead do we need to recruit for a September start in China?
Spring, realistically. The authentication and legalisation of documents happens in the teacher's home country and takes weeks that neither of you controls, and the work permit and Z visa steps follow it. Schools that start in July are usually still waiting when term begins.
Can we hire a teacher already living in China?
Often yes, and it removes the slowest steps, since their documents are already authenticated and a permit transfer is simpler than a first application. If your timeline is short, in-country candidates are worth far more to you than the salary difference suggests.
What should a China teaching contract spell out?
Teaching hours separately from office hours, class size and age range, housing and flight terms, any completion bonus and its conditions, paid leave, and notice on both sides. Ambiguity on hours is the most common cause of a teacher leaving mid-contract, which costs far more than writing the clause properly.

Immigration and licensing requirements change. Confirm the current position with the relevant ministry or authority before you contract a teacher.
